“Conversations with the Moon Part 1” created 2021, presented 2023.
A four image mini-series documenting an evening with a full moon rise in Maracas Bay.
In this Collection, I share with you four (4) select images comprising a mini-series I photographed in 2021 titled appropriately as follows; Image (i) A stroll unawares, Image (ii) Quiet conversations, Image (iii) Framed serenity & Image (iv) Delightful combinations: sunset and moonrise at the beach. These are the result of a combination of a few of my favorite subject matter. Relevant to us here is what is maybe the average Trinidadian’s favorite beach, Maracas Bay and the odd beach goer carrying about their activities mixed in with the characteristic human and natural elements. All these came together in various ways in these photos, demonstrating the interaction, seemingly unawares or oblivious, as the moon does its routine. Or just maybe, they are aware and deliberately or consciously enjoying the moment.
Image (i) A stroll unawares. In this first image, I initially set out my composition based on prior planning for the moon’s intended position however this couple walked into the frame. Initially a bit perturbed by this, I subsequently embraced this occurrence as I realized they added a wonderful touch to this image both from a composition standpoint and secondly, and most importantly, I came to the realization that with these folks in the frame the overall storyline for the series took on a more meaningful dimension.
Image (ii) Quiet conversations. A magical moment shared between a couple as they spent some quiet time at the head of the pier under the gaze of the rising moon, amidst the sounds of the incoming waves and blowing sea breeze. These are the moments that form the best memories.
Image (iii) Framed serenity. Framing the serene scenes at Maracas Bay on that wondrous evening. I really was targeting the composition shown in Image iii, I found it so delightful with all elements in the frame perfectly arranged to my satisfaction. While doing so, I managed to glance at the pier in the distance shown in Image ii to witness this couple at the head of the pier enjoying the view and taking in the moment. I promptly abandoned my first composition and framed the scene showed in Image ii as I could not pass up the moment of these two in the frame. Clearly they understood the assignment and were living in the moment enjoying the moonrise. They spent quite some time there and I really had to wonder what conversations they had with the moon. After capturing them and the wider scene to my heart’s content, I returned to the original framing. It all worked out well because shortly thereafter reframing the shot with the tree to the left, boat to the right looking toward the moon and mountain in the distance, the sky with those wispy clouds took on a wonderful hue and pleasing colour to add life to my frame. It lasted a while and was totally unexpected as simply moments before the sky was looking a bit dull. What an evening, one which I can’t forget for the amazing scenes I witnessed.
Image (iv) Delightful combinations: sunset and moonrise at the beach. What more can a photographer, a beach goer, a keen observer or anyone for that matter ask for? The ultimate end to an amazing day culminated with a double treat of a delightful sunset and moonrise in one go. That pair of beach goers in the water, myself and a select few others really got to enjoy the ultimate show.
